Supported Field Types Explained

Last Updated: Jul 31, 20262 min read

Each field type solves a specific job. Knowing when to use which keeps your documents clean and your signers unconfused.

The Field Types

1.  Signature: the signer's full legal mark, applied from their saved signature or created on the spot. Every signer should have at least one.

2.  Initials: a compact mark for acknowledging individual pages or clauses ("initial here to confirm you read section 7").

3.  Date: auto-fills with the signing date, or lets the signer pick one. Pair one with every signature line.

4.  Text: free-form input for names, job titles, ID numbers, or anything typed.

5.  Checkbox, binary consent: "I agree to receive communications", "I have read the policy".

6.  Dropdown: a controlled choice from options you define, cleaner than free text when only certain answers are valid.

Required vs. Optional

Any field can be required or optional. Required fields gate completion; the signer's toolbar counts them down ("1 required field left") and Finish stays disabled until they're done.

Tip: Make consent checkboxes required, but leave "middle name" optional; required fields should be things you genuinely cannot accept the document without.
