How to Request Attachments from Signers

Last Updated: Sep 24, 20262 min read

Signer attachments let you collect supporting files in the same step as the signature. Instead of chasing a copy of a driver's license or an insurance certificate by email after the contract is signed, you place an Attachment field on the document and the signer uploads the file before they finish.

What You Can Collect

Any file the signer has as a PDF, JPG, or PNG, up to 10 MB per file. Common examples:

•  A photo ID for a rental or loan application.

•  Proof of address or a recent utility bill.

•  A certificate of insurance from a contractor.

•  A signed W-9 or other tax form from a new vendor.

Each signer can upload up to 5 files by default. If your process needs more, an account admin can raise the limit to 25 files per signer. The feature is included on every plan, Free included.

Adding the Attachment Field

The Attachment field is placed the same way as any other field. If you have not placed fields before, read how to add signature and form fields first.

1.  Add your recipients, then click Next to open the Sign Request Editor.

2.  Select the signer who should upload files. Every field you place from now on belongs to that signer.

3.  Drag the Attachment field from the field palette onto the page. Put it next to the sentence that tells the signer what to provide, such as "Attach a copy of your current insurance certificate."

4.  Click the field and set it to required if the signer cannot finish without uploading, or optional if the file is helpful but not essential.

5.  Send the request as usual.

When the signer reaches the field, they see an Add attachment button. Share what the signer sees with anyone who asks how it works on their side.

Viewing and Downloading the Files

Uploads are stored with the sign request, not sent to your inbox. Open the request from your dashboard and go to its attachments list, which shows how many files were uploaded and lets you preview or download each one. The sign request detail page explains the rest of that screen.

Tips for Clean Submissions

•  Say exactly what you need. A label like "Front and back of your photo ID" gets the right file the first time.

•  Require only what you must have. Every required upload adds a step for the signer, so leave nice-to-have files optional.

•  Use one field per document type. Separate fields for "ID" and "Proof of address" make the files easier to find later.

See the full list of supported field types for the other fields you can combine with it.
